Art Basel is a very clever art show: it is held in two of the cities with the biggest money power in the world: Basel (Switzerland) and Miami Beach. Miami is not the same as Miami Beach. In fact, they are two different cities. The former is inland, while the latter is the tourist destination next to the sea that we all imagine when we think about this Florida city. Also, Art Basel is not the same as other art shows in the world. Any self respecting gallery aspires to being at this event since it is a direct way of accessing the US market. Some of the pieces at Art Basel are sold at astronomical prices, although here, of course, art could say “because I’m worth it”. The sixth edition of Art Basel will take place between 6 and 9 December and, this time, there will be around 200 galleries from 30 countries. Not many, considering the around 850 candidates. Through those 200 fortunate galleries, the works of over 2,000 artists will be on show, including the main contemporary names. More figures: around 40,000 art aficionados and 1,400 media companies are expected to attend. Apart from the sections into which the show is divided: “Art Nova”, “Art Kabinett”, “Art Positions”, Art Basel Miami Beach is rounded out with loads of events that mix art, films, music, architecture and design. Moreover, the Florida museums will organise major exhibitions to coincide with the show’s dates. Art is served. Bon appétit!
